NEW YEAR, NEW HOME

Alex and I moved out of our apartment on December 31st, we literally rang in the new year moving our belongings into our van. We still had some things to tidy upstairs in our apartment while we also trying rearranged our stuff into our limited garage and closet space. The brisk air kept me moving up and down the stairs and the new year cheers from our neighbors in the building was a perfect soundtrack of celebration.

I worked earlier that day so the day felt long and tiring by the time midnight rolled around. Once everything was cleaned out upstairs and packed away, we headed straight to Jack n’Box for our midnight meal and quickly turn in the for night. Alex and I taken trips in our van before but this was our first official night where sleeping in the van was our only residence. This was it, this was our new home for the foreseeable future.

For those who might be wondering, how long do you plan to live like this? The answer is I don’t know and I am okay with that. Ideally it would cool to spend a full calendar year on the road so we can take our time to travel the states and post up wherever we would like. However, that timeline is not set in stone, maybe Alex and I will fall in love with this lifestyle and decide to continue to do it for longer. Maybe this isn’t for us and after a couple weeks or months we decided to settle back down to a permanent residence. I have worked towards having better acceptance with understanding that life is always in transition and that nothing in life is permeant. A newly adopted motto for myself is: why not try something different in order to figure it out if its in fact something for you. Even then people change throughout time its okay to change your mind as well.

Change can be scary but if tv sitcoms and books have taught me anything is that change is just different. Its important to live through changes and then decide weather its beneficial or not for yourself. Also change is more empowering when you choose to to do something different rather than change happening to you. But ultimately, it comes down to adaptability, how adaptable are you to a new change?

People find their comfort in their everyday luxuries that can make adaptability difficult. I am not here to promote van life because it is in fact not for everyone. Living in a smaller space, having to carrying fresh water, monitoring your water usage, frequently planning where to drive and stop, along with other tasks may not be appealing to everyone. What I do recommend is be open to an idea that could possibility bring you new joy. Challenge your level of adaptability to open yourself to new opportunities.

Like I mentioned earlier, I don’t know how long I will do this nomadic lifestyle. For now, I know I am happy just to have this opportunity. May the new year and our new home continue to bring us safe travels, good health, and beautiful sights along the way. Thanks for reading and I hope this inspires you to do something new today, peace out.
