Most of us will experience losing someone dear to us at some point in our life. Although death may bring much pain and loss to you, I hope it may also bring you love, happiness, and gratitude as you reflect back on the life lived together.
My first experience with death was losing my brother Jose. Jose was a talented artist who could draw, paint, and sculpt. He was an avid comic book fan, created a skating crew with his friends, rented so many movies for our family to watch, listened to a lot of Beatles, and was constantly making a joke of something which caused everyone around him to laugh. His energy and comedic timing were always on point. Losing him truly was heartbreaking to all who knew him.
Jose was only 24 years old when he was diagnosed with leukemia in the winter of 2003. Jose went into remission around 2007-2009 but unfortunately his health declined by the summer of 2010, and he passed away. Most of Jose’s young adulthood was battling cancer. I don’t know how he did it, how he could push through all that at his age. I’m sure he had his dark days, days he felt too sick to find any simple pleasure. Yet, what I recall most about him is his silliness and his effortless coolness. Jose knew who he was, and he created joy and art wherever he went.
Jose, you have inspired me in many ways to move forward in life and this time living on the road has made me feel more connected to you as I look outward to the world that surrounds us. I miss you and love you.
Always your little sister,
Lupi
